Understanding the Essence of Nurse Delegation
WHAT IS NURSE DELEGATION?
The Nurse Delegation Program, as outlined by Washington State law, permits nursing assistants in certain settings to undertake specific duties, such as administering prescription medications or conducting blood glucose testing, which are typically within the purview of licensed nurses. A registered nurse is responsible for instructing and overseeing nursing assistants, as well as conducting nursing assessments of patient conditions.
Luna Nurse Delegation provides services in compliance with WAC 246-840-910 through 246-840-970, where registered nurses offer training and nursing oversight for nursing assistants tasked with delegated nursing duties. Our services encompass initial assessments, care planning, competency evaluations for nursing assistants, obtaining client consent, additional guidance, and supervisory visits. Clients eligible for Luna Nurse Delegation services must meet the criteria of being deemed “stable and predictable” by the delegating nurse.

- The client is unable to perform the last step/get the medication where it needs to go
- The client is unaware that he/she is taking medication
- The client has dementia or a cognitive impairment and does not know how/when to ask for the appropriate "as needed" medications
- The client requires the caregiver to puncture the skin for blood sugar monitoring or insulin administration
